X-ray radioscopy and other in-situ techniques applied on the study of polymeric foams

X-ray radioscopy is a time-resolved imaging technique in which a series of high resolution radiographies is acquired to monitor an evolving process. In the particular case of studying foam evolution this technique has demonstrated to be a unique powerful tool to understand the "hidden" mechanisms influencing the foam behaviour. Nevertheless it's challenging to obtain quantitative results from the obtained images and it is necessary to develop tailored image analysis tools.
The lecture will describe this technique in detail (hardware and image analysis software) and will summarize those most interesting results obtained up to know with the new lab radioscopy set up constructed in the Cellular Materials laboratory. The facility has been specially designed for monitoring low absorbing materials, such the polymer foams, achieving an optimum contrast.
Some other non-standard in-situ techniques designed in our laboratory for the study of foam evolution under other particular conditions will be briefly discussed as well.
